with spring well and truly in the air and party season in step, mosaic records boss steve o sullivan launches mosaic s 38th release - joining forces with fellow londoner frazer campbell for a new studio collaboration. not content with letting the dust settle from his recent work alongside ricardo villalobos, o sullivan has stayed a little closer to his london home to work with frazer campbell for this latest tag team effort. a dextrous hand in the mix and producer in his own right, campbell has a passion for all things that sit on the deeper end of the house, techno and electronica spectrum. in his own words, thought emoting music is central to his mission having launched open recordings and elliot project records last year: a worthy sparring partner indeed. since the start of the year, the pair had their heads down focusing on finding a happy medium between deeply swung grooves and the airy influences of detroit - shaking out an interesting trio of tracks for their label debut. far from treading the obvious path, the main event a1 hypnotonic revels in a lighter touch as metronomic beat programming cycles endlessly to a held set of notes. off-kilter bass pulses, warped out vocals and effect splashes all intersect to keep the energy input constant as they capture one of those less frenzied moments where the very notion of time seems to hold still. make no mistake, this is a slow burn vibe. head to the flipside b1 soultonic to plunge yourself straight into hip twitching mode when the lights go down. a deep chord, syncopated hats and deftly tweaked synths echo as a full dose of shuffle inflicts its move. simple yet so effective, this track will not let you down. winding things back up a touch, the tougher edge of alleyway funk pushes the feeling on thanks to a thumping kick and a deft nod towards uk garage. met with a soft glisten of a rhodes piano and tweakish melody, the pair round things off in a boyant mood - fans of soul capsule and schatrax will no doubt agree. repeat play of this ep is recommended as its all the more rewarding for it.

there’s a delicacy to the performances by toxe—not a fragile delicacy, but the kind you’d associate with an olympic rhythmic gymnast, whose twirls only seem light and graceful because of the immense muscular power behind them. “ - fader toxe’s horizons are very wide - she has deconstructed britney spears in -xic- for halcyon veil and with ‘still life’ (co-produced with mechatok) she caught the atttention of kenzo who used it as a score to their fw 2016 prints’ presentation and she has also performed alongside arca. toxe exhibits her relentless creativity as she edits and produces her own videos designs her visuals, exhibiting her relentless creativity which has lead to the excitement for the upcoming audio visual collaboration. the work, ‘morning story’, was created in collaboration with artist niclas hille. released on limited edition vinyl and also digitally in may 2017. the swedish musician crafts some of the most stomach-churning music productions, innovative drum patterns and lovelorn melodies in the scene. her debut ep ‘muscle memory’ was released on staycore in october 2015. on the five tracks of this release she clashed boulder-heavy rhythms against intricate details painting a picture very human and emotional, developing a very distinctive sound. the artist concluded 2016 with her first ever south-american tour. more recently, toxe played at berlin s ctm festival and meetfactory in prague. the swedish experimentalist has just been announced for a gucci x club to club night in milan, best kept secret and wiener festwochen s new hyperreality festival.

the third release on the emergent dreamtime label finds bobby bricks and miskotom sharing precious wax space with their own takes on laid back balearic house. bricks is up first, laying down a laid back house chugger propelled by fluttering synth lines that have spent time soaking up plenty of vitamin d. amazon blue does away with the drums for much of the tune, letting the new age synth tones do all the work before a mellow set of percussion comes loping in. miskotom has a more nocturnal feel at work on star master, but it s no less plush in its execution, while ad lucem ramps up fretless bass licks and plastic flute tones for another blissful excursion onto the astral plane.

naveed akhtar is truly one of the unsung heroes of manchester s ever vibrant music scene. under his freak seven & sasso aliases, naveed has enjoyed support and acclaim from hordes of dancers and discerning dj s alike. his expertly crafted productions speak for themselves, and we re more than happy to present the debut release on his newly minted northern life records label. the a side houses day come through a ridiculously uplifting, but bitter-sweet hymn crafted from the bones of detroit techno and the soul of deepest nyc, via the rain-soaked streets of downtown manchester this wonderful ear worm is already attracting deserved plaudits and ecstatic reactions. on the flip largo is a crisply rendered, heads-down jam, shot through with the heavy production dynamic, but melodic light touch a hypnotic delight. finally raspberry toast featuring the handsome guitar work of begin is a beautiful homage to the sun-soaked mediterranean, which has inspired so much of the manchester music scene. an incredible debut, we re sure you ll agree!

elliot adamson knows how good he is, which is equally as daunting as it is impressive. i’ve known him since he was the eager beaver barman at a place i’d play regularly in my hometown, who used to try and stick his demos under my nose, and now he seems poised for world domination with a who s who of the worlds biggest djs singing his praises. i’m so pleased i listened to those demos when i did. elliot has a startling breadth and depth of taste for someone of such tender years (although to be honest, people only mention other peoples youth when they feel like they’re getting old themselves). the ep elliot has provided for me me me covers a range of vibes which can be traced through mid 90s house, millennial techno and that current and contemporary feel that we’re all still struggling to name adequately. elliot is a real talent and i couldn’t be happier to provide a platform for what i feel is his most esoteric work to date, and a worthy showcase of his real capabilities.

following “conningham ep” reach return with another uncompromising 12” from duo thread. dropping it’s predecessors unashamedly raw bashfulness, “goldhawk ep” is a subtler, deeper affair yet it still maintains its bass heavy, electro leaning edge.
the first track “ellerslie” ets the tone for the ep, a trip through the cosmos, with shimmering synth lines taking you on a journey through the galaxy. subtle variations float effortlessly on the driving rhythm patterns, the bassline only a distant presence. the 2nd cut “sycamore” is another journey into the deep, a slightly more housey affair, a motorik drum patterns carrying an eerie, deep atmosphere that is punctuated by melodic patterns appearing unexpectedly.
on the flip “the grove” instantly works up a sweat - claps, dark synth riffs and a relentless drum pattern. ferocious, in your face dance floor work out. rounding-off the ep in style “goldhawk” is the sparsest of the tracks on offer. built on bare bones frame, there’s melodic flourishes, subtle production trickery, galloping along a 2 step-ish percussion pattern. thread further cementing their eclectic production style with this strong ep.

(get bad). the result? one of the most unlikely and essential party records of 2017. queen and house music: not necessarily the most obvious of bedfellows, but music for freaks has never been a label to take the path most travelled. over the course of their de-cades long journey the label founded by luke solomon and justin harris has released uni-quely idiosyncratic dance music, establishing the label as a go-to imprint for those seeking imaginative, unpredictable records that still undeniably work on the dancefloor. their latest release might well be among the most out-there of them all. originally released back in 1984,two sharp pencils (get bad) is a record by queen drum-mer roger taylor, featuring him on vocals as well as drums, bass & guitar. now brought bang up to date via a fully official and endorsed remix courtesy of anna wall & corbi, this overlooked album track looks set to become one of the summers most essential records. born and bred in the uk, anna wall is a dj, producer and label owner who is a key player in london’s underground house music scene. her label the bricks champions up-and-coming producers, while anna herself has djd all over the world, most recently for mixmag at pacha for their ims launch party. corbi is an ibiza-based dj and producer, a&r for the highly respected fina records and co-founder of melon bomb, a party and dj collective that has in the space of just a couple of years become one of the white isles most talked-about exports. having met while working at house giant defected records some years ago, anna felt that corbi would be the perfect studio accomplice to work on the remix of two sharp pencils.

ensuring they keep things pushing forwards while also celebrating their past, vibraphone call upon rising talent gemil to deliver an ep that is purely fresh material. -forces & gravity- is perfectly honed to get the maximum response from the dance with its muscular production and catchy vocal sample, but if you want an even more focused affair the remix strips things down to the bare necessities and works just as effectively. on the b side -horizon- gets a touch more playful in its synth work with interplaying riffs creating a dazzling whole, and then -solar storm- brings the heads-down, hard-swinging heaviness into the mix in a devastating finishing blow.

thule s dark doppelganger ae recordings was revived last year with the excellent freyja ep by nonnimal, and now the saga continues with this devastatingly on-point release from cold. much like the vibe on thule, the music on thule continues to channel the mood of the icy tundra into refined, modern club tracks, but there s definitely a more sinister intent at work in these tracks from cold. -aerials- is a nightmarish chugger loaded with eerie sonics, while -phased out- lays down some fine dubby processing over a bed of chilly chord pulses. -exiles- is a standout track thanks to its crafty groove, coming on a little more housey than its counterparts but still heavier than the average thule jam.

la vida sigue igual’ is immediately a more physical affair than its predecessor, kicking off with the title track, a hard hitting percussive monster. the sparse simplicity of the machine gun synth work & monotone spanish vocals by mystic bill evoke classic 80 s industrial and art house dance tracks. we’ve included the instrumental version for adventurous djs who want play doubles. on the b-side are two versions of the track “animals”. version 1 explores the underbelly of ny with maniacal industrial rhythms and samples from diamanda galas and travis bickle (robert deniro) in taxi driver. version 2 ventures into dark freestyle territory, fueled by the underground energy of chicago’s warehouse and medusas clubs

catherine and gerald o-connell s work as lives of angels quietly and subtly helped to define a whole generation of post-punkers for the greater part of the 1980s. much like other luminaries of the scene at the time, the couple have remained in the shadows of time, highly praised by the collectors but barely ever cited by the mainstream, and if that s not punk then we don t know what is. dark entries are doing the honours of course, and the imprint have managed to license a whole bag of previously released and unreleased material, the former from a bunch of dusty cassettes which are now going for gold on the second-hand market. this was the era of the drum machine, and these 11 tunes are all carried by that unmistakable analogue swing, at times harsh and leaning into something tech-minded, and at other times playful and quirky, a tendency which defined this outfit and the time in which they operated. what a record, this is another dark entries monster

polish beatmaker pawel strzelczyk has been slinging out all manner of beats as teilete since 2010, largely on the u know me label, but now he brings his dynamic technicolour sound to father & son to surely catapult his skills to a wider audience. there s a rich musicality at work throughout magnetic soul/magnetic tree, as blues samples, rich orchestration, dubstep rhythms, juke patterns and soulful vocals all swirl around in a highly accomplished blender. the attention to detail is remarkable and the production is pristine, but for all the daring ideas and studio skill this is also an incredibly immediate listen that draws you in from the start.

new talent from detroit. hazmat s infinite silence ep is as deep as they come, and is the first release in a new series of detroit artist releases from third ear. following on from third ear s landmark detroit beatdown series, the new detroit deep series of releases is just that. hazmat has played keyboards for artists such as bilal and mary j blige, as well as detroit legends kenny dixon jr, amp fiddler and delano smith. along the way, he started to make his own beats and his own tracks and is now ready to take things to the next level. he also plays keys with motown legacy artists touring bands, such as the the four tops, the detroit spinners, the gap band. it s not all about the beats and the synths, though. hazmat s work using the talkbox is right up there.

the signs within is drunken kong s debut album on tronic, featuring collaboration with label boss christian smith. with this work japanese duo prove they are here to stay with some top notch techno. whilst keeping the groove alive, they deliver some punching bass lines, rolling subs and deep synths.

gas grabaciones second cut it s an interesting mixture of two well known artists at their hometown. -eterno- is a very skilled dj with years of experience and also with wide experience producing, from day one he s an important reference for the label. on the other side we have -matias muten- track, his blasting live sets are an exquisite reference in uruguay. when talking about live performances, matias is a must. this work from both artists will try to tell with their analog, eclectic, bumping sounds how s the deal down in uruguay with experienced producers. ideal to play it both sides on the same dj set, they in some way complement each other, as if the story to tell is the same.

over the last fifty years few musicians or performers have created as monumental and uncompromising a body of work as that of keiji haino. through a vast number of recordings and performances haino has staked out a ground all his own creating a language of unparalleled intensity that defies any simple classification. for all this, his 1981 debut album watashi dake? has remained enigmatic. originally released in a small edition by the legendary pinakotheca label, the album was heard by only a select few in japan and far fewer overseas. original vinyl copies became impossibly rare and highly sought after the world over. watashi dake? presents a haunting vision stark vocals, whispered and screamed, punctuate dark silences. intricate and sharp guitar figures interweave, repeat and stretch, trance-like, emerging from dark recesses. written and composed on the spot haino’s vision is one of deep spiritual depths that distantly evokes 1920s blues and medieval music yet is unlike anything ever committed to record before or since. coupled with starkly minimal packaging featuring the now iconic cover photographs by legendary photog rapher gin satoh, the album is a startling and fully realized artistic statement.

the broken glass is a work conceived and produced between austria and spain and represents the eleventh reference of the catalogue of stoerung label. in this collaboration field recordings and synthesis processed by asferico create cyclical and hypnotic structures, which mia zabelka furnishes with her violin and voice. the lp version consists of two versions of the piece, the first more minimalist and conceptual and the second more rhythmical and synthesizer based. through a display of distorted and isolated sounds, we are driven in the first version into an deep listening, as if sounds where placed under a microscope or we were contemplating them through a telescope. this approach lets us perceive the bare physicality of sounds in a way which enables us to grasp subtleties and aspects of sound which we are not used to. the second version continues where the first version left us, but in this piece, we are eventually flooded by hypnotic loops, white noise and synthesis and the experience has a different flavor. now what we have acquired through the first version, the enhancement of our listening and appreciation of subtleties of sounds, is inserted into a rhythmical structure which acts as a strong current, pulling us inside an ocean full of astonishing sounds.

with a career spanning over 20 years worth of djing, production and label work, shlomi aber has gradually cemented his position as one of the scene’s cornerstones. his first outing for figure sees the now barcelona-based artist drawing on his many influences to deliver a tastefully rounded three- tracker. under two worlds grooves sublty aong a funky acid riff, while anthemic synths longilgy recall bygone moments of grandeur. this unique aber-ability, creating a composition that is as elegantly understated as it is undoubtedly epic, also comes through on the record’s b-side. paced only at half-time and drenched in dubby reverb, the weighing beats of ‚rumbles’ engage with delicately shapedhead sounds for some seriously spaced-out head nods. matrix is an tightly woven mesh of machinery insides, which aber nevertheless manages to channel into a fairly straight forward kinetic energy.

the album attains a unique harmony while drawing from a myriad of beliefs and practices. syncretism appears not only in the name but in the artwork and the music itself. the independent tonal passages draw on aspects of varied genres while creating a remarkably coherent yet homogeneous work. lvis mejía explores in his second album, topics of the christian religion and the history of man. deftly placed style and tempo contrasts express the various antagonisms found in this discourse. with the use of contemporary music in combination with hints of jazz, mejía designs spherical soundscapes, therefore allowing for musical deformations, hence the title aforma. the result is an experience that evokes abstract musical impressions. a reference to christianity is also embedded in the track order as the first piece patefactio opens the musical event much like a christian mass. the travel proceeds through the lurking clerical chants of aeternus-the final trial, whilst the bells are then calling us to mass with the track in dissonata apocalypse and continuing with the ontological concept of belief in in ghost we trust. everything comes full circle with the history of homo errata as a conglomerate of human errors. this final piece serves also as a link to the second part of the album anthropology of amnesia a musical description of repression and forgetting as a condition of life, which has emerged as a theme of human existence since the beginning of recorded history. with this opening piece artist and musician lvis mejía has created a magical musical experience, leaving us eager for its sequel.

emlock founder untold is back on the label with his first vinyl ep since ‘doff’ on sub-label hblk back in 2015. this release follows appearances on last year’s #savefabric compilation, and more recently on ‘magic city iii’ compiled by mixpak boss jubilee. hek029 follows a rewarding period of a&r for hemlock that has so far delivered eps from bruce and parris, with several more scheduled to drop throughout 2017. ep’s two winding tracks are a natural progression from the fiercely textural drum work of untold’s previous singles and album ‘black light spiral.’ here the material is given more space to breathe and released from the grid creating a lighter more footloose feel. ‘tear up the club’ carries the weight of dmz era half-step using a loose web of elasticated breaks and builds to reveal a striking melodic line. on ‘watton res’ exotic tones are further compressed and expanded in sequence, encasing drum machine, keyboards and guitar work within a delicate shell.

seth troxler’s agenda setting play it say it label is back with more summer heat, this time from detroit based duo ataxia. hailing from detroit, this pair has recently played the famous movement festival in their home city for the fifth time, work with top labels like nervous records and culprit la and have already impressed with a fine ep on leftroom this year. their sound is designed to get the party started, and after already releasing on this label in 2016 they are now back with three more essential tracks. up first, the terrific ‘time original’ is a fluid and wriggling tech cut with busy synth lines scurrying about over driving drums. it’s dark and freaky with poised chord stabs and the whole thing cannot fail to get floors moving. then comes ‘supertouch’, which is a superbly slick acid number. weird bleeps and clipped vocals add an unhinged edge to the urgent rubbery drums and the whole thing is a mind melting number that will take any set to the next level. last of all is the vital ‘villains’, seven inventive minutes of gurgling bass, alien sound design and wonky synth lines that all warp around each other and melt your mind as they do so. colourful and full of character thanks to a rapped vocal line, this one is a real party anthem in the making. across all three cuts here this talented duo really show off their wide range of studio skills in some style.
